TheStreet.com reported this week the top ten states by number of breweries and the best beers produced in each state: http://www.thestreet.com/print/story/12955213.html
And the top ten states with the fewest number of breweries: http://www.thestreet.com/print/story/12955383.html
California took the top spot with 508 breweries and Mississippi was the lowest with six. DC made the fewest breweries list with 11, but that’s a bit unfair since the size of DC (68.3 square miles) would be a mere neighborhood in the big cities in most of these states (think San Diego at 372 square miles). The data comes from Bloomberg which ranks Virginia at 15 with 77 permitted breweries in 2013: http://www.bloomberg.com/visual-data/best-and-worst//most-brewery-permits-states
