Old Ox, Solace and Ocelot are partnering up to host the first annual Beer Can Derby! Think of this as a Pinewood Derby for adults! Racers will make their cars using empty Solace, Old Ox or Ocelot 12oz or 16oz beer cans to compete for the Championship!

Dates:

• May 3 – Practice Run at Ocelot (3 to 8PM)
• May 6 – Time Trial at Ocelot (4 to 6PM)
• May 10 – Practice Run at Solace (3 to 8PM)
• May 13 – Time Trial at Solace (4 to 6PM)
• May 16 – Practice Run at Old Ox
• May 20 – Time Trial at Old Ox
• May 29 – Championship Race at Old Ox (1PM)

Registration

Registration is $10 per car that will be entered to race.

Half of this registration fee will go towards the prize pool for the Top 3 cars determined at the Championship Race on May 29. The other half of the registration fee will go to cover the cost of the materials for the track, logistics, etc.

The total cash prize pool will be dependent on the number of people registered.

The $10 registration fee does not include the beer can. Please see “Regulations” below for specific information regarding the build of your car.

The registration is per car. You may register as many cars as you would like to race. Each car can have a pit crew. We encourage each “driver”, pit crew, etc. to wear matching shirts, just like the professionals!

Derby Car Regulations, Requirements and Specifications

The beer can will be your car. You are encouraged to use your ingenuity when building your car. You may use a pine derby car kit or you may use just the can. As long as the finished car meets the following specifications it is your choice.

All cars must pass the following inspection points to qualify for the race:

• One 12oz or 16oz Solace, Old Ox or Ocelot beer can must be incorporated in the build of the car. Cutting, shaping and filling to weight is allowed.
• Overall car weight shall not exceed 6oz. The official race scale will be considered final. Every car must be weighed prior to the race in order to qualify.
• Overall length of the car shall not exceed 8”
• Overall width of the car shall not exceed 2 ¾”
• Wheel bearings, washers and bushings are prohibited.
• No oil may be used. Axles may be lubricated with powdered graphite or silicone.
• The car may not have any starting/propulsion devices such as fans, compressed gas, electric motors, explosives, etc.
• No loose materials of any kind, everything on your car will need to be securely fastened to your car to prevent any debris from becoming an obstacle on the track.

Races will be held on a 4 lane, 32’ track with timers.

We will be using the Recorded Speed method for determining winners. Cars will race once in each lane of the track. We have a four lane track, so your car will race four times. Each of these times will be compiled with the shortest amount of time determining the final standings of each heat.

You must finish in the top 50% of the participants during the Time Trials to advance to the Championship on May 29. The same scoring method will be used on Championship race day to crown the winner.

You may participate in one or all three Time Trials being held on May 6 (Ocelot), May 13 (Solace) and May 20 (Old Ox).

Practice dates are May 3 (Ocelot), 10 (Solace) & 16 (Old Ox). This is your opportunity to see what your car can do on the actual track being used for race day and make any adjustments before the Time Trials.

Prizes!

The three cars with the fastest race times at the Championship on May 29 will be eligible for the prize pool. The prize pool will be determined by the number of participants but will be paid out as follows:

• 1st Place – 50% of the Prize Pool
• 2nd Place – 30% of the Prize Pool
• 3rd Place – 20% of the Prize Pool

So your car may not be the fastest or maybe wasn’t even functional! We can appreciate form over function and want to reward that with some winners for best in show!
